Malta’s BIGGEST Festa: Santa Marija

You may be noticing quite a few businesses with signs in the windows saying that they are closed for a week.  Heard more Maltese accents on the beaches perhaps, or found it impossible to get parking near the shops.

This is because it’s the Festa of Santa Marija this week, Malta’s biggest and most enthusiastically embraced of all the local festivals.  The actual feast day is on Friday 15th, which is also a public holiday, but the festivities tend to spill over the sides a little and a lot of Maltese will just take the week off so as to dedicate themselves properly to the occasion.

St Paul’s Festa

Don’t worry if you think you’ll miss all the action, as this Festa is celebrated in no less than 7 villages and towns around Malta, so surely you aren’t too far away from one of these:

– Attard
– Birkikara
– Gudja
– Ghaxaq
– Qrendi
– Mosta
– Mqabba

We were advised by a local adviser that Wednesday 13th is one of the best evenings to arrive in Mosta, as Friday evening involves (sombre voice) a lot of religious stuff.  Our guide perked up again when describing the cheap cocktails and lottery tickets to win a 50″ TV, not to mention the fireworks on Saturday night.

It’s the biggest festival of the year, so be sure to make the most of it.
