Good News working folk! Malta proudly boasts more public holidays than any other country in the EU.
Just so you don’t lose track, here’s a handy list (note that if a holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday it is not carried over to Monday, so no extra holiday for us working folk).

- 01/01/2015 New Year – we’re familiar with this one in most parts of the world (Thurs)
- 10/02/2015 Saint Paul´s Shipwreck – this commemorates St Paul’s accidental visit to the island, which has not been conclusively proven to have happened, although it seems pretty likely that it did (Tue)
- 19/03/2015 Saint Joseph – Jesus’ step-father doesn’t get much kudos in a lot of countries, but he is acknowledged in Malta (Thurs)
- 31/03/2015 Freedom Day Malta – as mentioned elsewhere on these pages, Malta is not shy about celebrating her independence. Freedom Day marks the day in 1979 when the last British troops left the island (Tue)
- 03/04/2015 Good Friday – again, familiar to the Christian world (Fri)
- 01/05/2015 Labour Day – a celebration for the working man. So he can take a day off from working (Fri)
- 10/05/2015 Mother´s Day – always on a Sunday, so no break from work, but the restaurants do a roaring trade on this day (Sun)
- 07/06/2015 National Holiday – this is a commemoration of a day when rioters were fired upon by British troops back in 1919 (Sun)
- 21/06/2015 Father´s Day – see Mother’s day, but slightly less so. Always a Sunday again (Sun)
- 29/06/2015 Saint Peter & Saint Paul – big celebrations in Rabat for this one, but everyone gets a holiday (Mon)
- 15/08/2015 Assumption of Mary – Mary ascends to heaven, Malta descends upon the beaches (Sat)
- 08/09/2015 Victory Day Malta – marking not one, but three separate victories. The Knights of St John during the Great Siege is celebrated along with Italy’s surrender in WW2 and the end of the uprising against the short-lived Napoleonic invasion about 150 years earlier (Tue)
- 21/09/2015 Independence Day – most countries have an independence day of some sort, and this one marks the date when Malta gained it’s independence from Britain in 1964 (Mon)
- 08/12/2015 Immaculate Conception – you will note a Catholic theme here (Tue)
- 13/12/2015 Republic Day – Malta becomes a Republic, so that’s a good enough reason for another holiday (Sun)
- 25/12/2015 Christmas – Merry Christmas! (Fri)

Oh this is really interesting! I’d been told by numerous people that Malta has the most public holidays in Europe. I wasn’t told that some of them are at the weekend, so in reality doesn’t mean an extra day off. In the UK we usually have 8 public holidays which are days off and from reading this I see Malta would have 10 this year that are actually days off, so still very good as every day is precious and all that haha! Just not quite as amazing as I’d initially thought. I bet the beaches get rammed on public holidays? 🙂

True! 🙂 When I visit in July I’m visiting Comino. Have you been? I’ve heard it’s paradise but gets very crammed in peak summer months. If you have been just how busy does it get, does it spoil it or is it still well worth a trip? 🙂 Thanks for all your help.

Comino will be at full capacity in July, so I suggest you take the earliest boat you can find to get over there. So yes it will be absolutely packed, but still worth visiting just the same.
