Bar Review: The Cork Bar

Cork's Irish Pub
Given the rivalry between the cities in Ireland, the Cork Bar should be the natural enemy of The Dubliner. And in the contest between them, there can be only one winner.  (It’s not Cork).  This bar is on the small side, quite a lot of booths.  There’s also a pool table and a big screen for various sporting events.  It doesn’t open too early in the day, and tends to cater to an older expat crew along with various drop-ins who are passing by, and as the bar is located in Paceville, there  are a reasonable number of people who do just that.

It’s not my favourite Irish place in Malta, and not just because I’m from Dublin.  It has had an overdue sprucing up with some new furniture and fittings put in, but for me it still doesn’t really have a comfortable vibe about it.  It’s a spot to drop in for a beer or two to watch the football, or when you’re on your way to somewhere else.

  1. But perhaps the greatest reason to choose the dubliner over corks is because they have too many leaves on their shamrocks! You may think they deliberately painted 4 leafed clovers but they were originally 3 leafed shamrocks but the next day someone had added another leaf! Maybe it was the leprechauns that did it? But to give them their due, at least you didn’t need to have an invitation to get in on paddy’s day, a warmer welcome than the dubliner i found and a much better band by the sounds of it!

    1. You have to book early to get into the Dubliner alright… although I went along in the early afternoon and got a wristband by virtue of the fact that I had an Irish accent – so you won’t find me complaining about the Dubliner!
